Melbourne Airport (MEL) and Avalon (AVV) are different arrivals. Check the airport code before comparing fares, then allow for baggage, transfers and the time you can actually check in.

Check the arrival airport code, local arrival date, baggage allowance and change conditions together. An overnight journey can land on a different calendar day from departure. Your accommodation check-in date should match the night you need the room, not automatically the date printed beside the first flight.
Keep connections and ground transport in the comparison. A late arrival may need a different transfer or a property with confirmed late check-in. If your plans include an event, leave a useful buffer instead of relying on a same-day arrival to reach the venue.
Flight schedules, routes, fares and seat availability are supplied by Booking.com when you search. SML Stays does not show a separate live flight feed.
Two airport codes. Different arrival plans.
Melbourne Airport · MEL
Also known as Tullamarine, MEL is the airport served by SkyBus Melbourne City Express to Southern Cross. Public buses are another option, with connections to the wider network. Check the terminal, operating hours and onward connection for your arrival.
A late flight can make an airport-area stay useful. Verify the property’s reception hours and transfer arrangements rather than assuming every nearby hotel has a shuttle.
Avalon Airport · AVV
Avalon is southwest of Melbourne, toward Geelong. Its city transfer is a different service from the MEL airport bus. Compare the complete cost and timing of your arrival, including the onward journey from Southern Cross.
Avalon can be worth considering for an itinerary that also visits Geelong. Check the actual flights and your first night’s location before treating the two airports as interchangeable.
A flexible choice for central sights and transport. If arriving at Southern Cross, check where the property sits within the CBD: a central-city address does not necessarily mean a short luggage walk from the station.
Useful for waterfront stays and Marvel Stadium visits. Look at the exact building entrance and the route from Southern Cross, especially with luggage or children.
Consider Southbank for the arts precinct, riverside evenings and Crown. Plan the connection across the river from your arrival point and check reception arrangements for late check-in.

Outward: Sydney Kingsford Smith (SYD) → Melbourne Airport (MEL). Return: MEL → SYD.
