Match your rental to the part of the trip that needs it. An airport pickup suits an onward drive; collecting a car later can work better when your first few days are in central Melbourne.

Consider airport pickup when you are driving onward after arrival. Check the terminal or shuttle instructions, desk hours and delayed-flight policy with the rental provider.

Airport pickup or city pickup?
Collect at the airport
Useful when you are driving onward soon after arrival or carrying bulky luggage. Compare the actual collection location, desk hours and any after-hours procedure. “Airport pickup” does not by itself promise an in-terminal desk or immediate vehicle access.
Allow time for baggage and collection formalities. Confirm what happens if your flight is delayed, and whether the rental provider needs your flight number.
Collect after your city stay
For a mainly central Melbourne visit, compare walking and public transport with the cost of keeping a car parked. A later city pickup may suit the day your regional drive begins.
Check the branch’s opening hours, vehicle return location and your trip back to the airport. A city collection and airport return may have different conditions or charges.
Read the rental conditions before comparing the total.
Parking is a separate decision
Look for properties with verified parking, then confirm the current fee, booking requirement, height clearance and whether the space is in the same building. A parking facility does not mean parking is free or a space is guaranteed.
Understand toll arrangements
Melbourne routes can include toll roads such as CityLink. Ask the rental company how tolls are handled and what administration charges apply. Check its policy before buying a separate pass so you do not set up overlapping arrangements.
Compare the deposit, excess, fuel policy, mileage limits, additional-driver conditions and licence requirements. Request child seats or other equipment explicitly; do not assume the displayed vehicle includes them.
Keep regional driving plans realistic.
A car can be useful for the Yarra Valley, Mornington Peninsula or a longer coastal itinerary. Choose the route before the rental period: a long scenic drive and an early flight the next day need more planning than an afternoon out of the city.
Build in rest stops and check current road conditions. Avoid committing to a long drive immediately after an overnight flight. Return the car with enough time for fuel, inspection and your airport check-in.
