For a first Melbourne visit with no single venue dominating the itinerary, the CBD is our starting recommendation. Choose Southbank if riverfront evenings, the arts precinct or Crown shape the trip. Put Docklands first when Marvel Stadium, a Docklands office or a waterfront apartment is the main reason for coming.

Those are starting points, not rankings. A well-placed property in your second-choice neighbourhood can work better than one at the wrong end of your favourite. Use this guide to choose an area, then compare the exact address, room and conditions in our Melbourne accommodation hub.

01 · Central & flexible

Melbourne CBD: a strong first-visit base

Flinders Street Station and the surrounding Melbourne CBD streetscape
Flinders Street Station illustrates the southern edge of the CBD; it is not a property photograph.

The CBD suits visitors whose plans change from day to day. You can build a stay around shopping, restaurants, theatres and sightseeing without committing to one waterfront or venue precinct. If you expect to come back to your room between activities, look at where those activities cluster rather than choosing the first address labelled “central”.

Choose the right part of the grid

The western side is useful to compare for Southern Cross arrivals, Docklands meetings and Marvel Stadium. The southern edge puts you on the city side of the Yarra, with river crossings toward Southbank. An eastern-city base is worth comparing for theatre plans or journeys toward Melbourne Park and the MCG. These are location strategies, not walking-time guarantees.

For business travellers, the best CBD location may simply be the block nearest the office. Check the entrance, breakfast arrangements, workspace and luggage storage. A hotel offering those practical services can be a better choice for a short work visit than an apartment with extra space you will barely use.

The trade-off

A central address does not guarantee a quiet room. Ask about the room’s orientation, nearby nightlife, traffic and any known building work. Families should compare the actual bedding and living area: a room with a sofa bed is not necessarily a separate-bedroom apartment. Browse Melbourne CBD accommodation once you know which side of the city fits your plans.

02 · River & arts

Southbank: for riverside evenings and an apartment base

The Yarra River and Southbank skyline in Melbourne
Southbank’s riverfront setting; views and access vary by building and booked room.

Southbank is a useful alternative when you want evenings around the river and days that include the arts precinct or Crown. It can suit a couple combining a show with dinner, a family wanting an apartment base, or a longer stay where a separate living area matters more than being in the middle of the CBD grid.

Do not treat every Southbank address as riverfront

A listing can be in Southbank without opening onto the promenade. Check the building entrance and the route to the bridge, tram stop or venue you will use. A view across the river is a room feature; convenient access to the river is a different question. Confirm both rather than relying on photographs.

For a conference at MCEC, compare the western side of Southbank with accommodation in adjacent South Wharf. MCEC’s Convention Centre entrance is in South Wharf, so the neighbourhood label alone is not enough. Use the entrance named on your event information when checking the route.

The trade-off

River crossings become part of many CBD outings, and not every Southbank tram journey is inside the Free Tram Zone. Restaurant choice can make the promenade attractive for an evening, but that does not mean every residential street has the same late-night options. Compare Southbank apartments and hotels by the location you will actually return to after dinner.

03 · Waterfront & stadium

Docklands: plan around the precinct, not just the postcode

Docklands deserves a place on the shortlist for Marvel Stadium visits, work in the western city and travellers seeking an apartment near the waterfront. Its appeal is different from the CBD’s laneways: you are choosing a harbour precinct rather than expecting the same streetscape and evening rhythm as the city centre.

Stadium edge, Victoria Harbour or NewQuay?

The stadium and Southern Cross side, Victoria Harbour and NewQuay are different accommodation decisions. Water, bridges and building entrances affect the route between them. If the trip revolves around Marvel, check the stadium gate and property entrance first. If it is a longer family stay, also check the practical route to groceries and the tram stop.

Business travellers should match the address to their office rather than assume every Docklands property is convenient for every Docklands workplace. Families and groups can compare apartment layouts, but a high-rise building is not proof of a full kitchen, laundry or the number of real bedrooms.

The trade-off

Docklands is not our default choice for a trip centred on CBD laneway nightlife or repeated visits to Melbourne’s eastern sporting precinct. There are dining pockets around the waterfront and The District, but opening hours and the journey back matter. Event nights can also change the atmosphere around the stadium. Explore Docklands accommodation with your main destination in mind.

Choose around your event before choosing your view

Marvel Stadium: start with Docklands and the western CBD. The stadium’s official access guide identifies Southern Cross as the adjacent station. Staying near the relevant approach can simplify your evening, but allow for event crowds and check the gate on your ticket.

MCG, Melbourne Park or AAMI Park: do not assume Docklands is the closest choice because it has a stadium. Compare the eastern or southern CBD, then weigh a Southbank stay against the actual onward route. For an MCG visit, official access guidance identifies Richmond and Jolimont stations. Check the specific venue’s advice for your event.

MCEC, Crown or an arts performance: the western and eastern ends of Southbank answer different needs. A conference delegate and an Arts Centre audience member should not automatically choose the same building. Use the event’s entrance and finish time to plan the return trip before booking.

Families and apartment stays: compare the room as carefully as the area

All three neighbourhoods can work for families. The deciding factor is often the daily routine: where you eat breakfast, whether children can sleep separately, and how easily you can return for a break. A convenient CBD layout may beat a larger apartment that adds an awkward journey twice a day; a well-located Southbank or Docklands apartment may be better for evenings spent together indoors.

Check whether “two bedrooms” means two enclosed bedrooms, which beds are supplied, whether a cot needs requesting, and whether kitchen and laundry facilities are private or shared. For a group, confirm bathrooms and keys as well as sleeping capacity. Do not infer facilities from a building’s general amenities or from another apartment’s photographs.

For serviced apartments, verify reception hours, luggage storage, cleaning frequency and after-hours check-in. Some managed apartments use a separate key-collection location. If you are driving, confirm parking availability, fees, height limits and the actual vehicle entrance before committing. These details are property-specific in every area.

Public transport, arrivals and evenings out

Melbourne’s Free Tram Zone covers the central city and extends into Docklands, but you should check your actual boarding and exit stops on the official map. Do not assume that a journey across the river into Southbank is free. Rail travel is not covered by the Free Tram Zone, and journeys beyond it require the appropriate ticket.

For an arrival through Southern Cross, compare the final leg to the property with luggage. A west-CBD or stadium-side Docklands address may be useful, but a property farther around the harbour can still require another connection. Check step-free access and the building entrance if stairs or uneven surfaces would be difficult.

For restaurants and nightlife, work backwards from where you want to spend the evening. The CBD is our starting point for a varied restaurant-and-laneway itinerary; Southbank fits a riverside dinner or performance; Docklands fits a waterfront evening close to your base. In every case, check current opening hours and the return journey rather than assuming services run to your preferred late finish.

A simple way to make your shortlist

  1. Mark your fixed commitments. Put the office, stadium, theatre or conference entrance first.
  2. Choose two possible areas. For a mixed first visit, start with CBD and Southbank. For Marvel or Docklands work, start with Docklands and western CBD.
  3. Compare equivalent rooms. Match bedrooms, bedding, kitchen facilities and cancellation terms before comparing the total price.
  4. Check the final journey. Include luggage, children, mobility needs and the return after your event.

There is no single best neighbourhood for every Melbourne visit. Choose the few journeys and room features that matter most, then use the Melbourne stay search to compare available options for your dates.
